Mötesplats Rydberg – Parentheses: A series of physics books

With Anna Kristensson, Graphic Designer, MA graduate from the Royal Danish Academy, Denmark, and a recipient of the Danish National Bank’s Jubilee Scholarship.
Parentheses: A series of physics books:
Parentheses show a proposal for what graphic design can mean for school books. The project of designing a physics book for gymnasium students is based on solid research and inclusive collaboration with teachers. The work has been awarded for showing how design can lead to new ways of thinking, not just for teaching material, but also for teaching methods. The project is centered around physics formulas’ everyday relevance for students in both content and imagery. In a time when scientific reasoning is often challenged, the book Parentheses is especially important as it aims to reinforce students' connection to the scientific principles that shape our world.
Design concept:
The title Parentheses draws inspiration from the symbols: ( ). A parenthesis is placed both on the front and back covers, symbolizing that everything within these covers is framed, just as parentheses enclose further details. The title emphasizes that the book’s content serves as additional context — expanding the core study of physics further into everyday life examples and clarifying complex information. Additionally, parentheses are fundamental in physics formulas, making the symbol relevant to the book’s theme. What’s unique about the design is that all the content in the book, from cover to illustrations is made from the same source: Numbers and symbols.
About:
Anna Kristensson is a graphic design MA graduate from the Royal Danish Academy with a focus on type design, research, and storytelling. Her mission is to make complex subjects more accessible and engaging through design. She is currently continuing to explore how design can inspire curiosity and deepen understanding, particularly in education.
