Quantum Physics and double anniversary at Kulturnatten

Dive into the exciting world of physics here in Lund – from the tiniest building blocks of matter to the mysteries of the cosmos.
Join us for fun experiments and demonstrations, where you can, among other things, try out a scanning electron microscope or slow down time with a high-speed camera.

This year’s event also features research presentations (in English or Swedish), the chance to visit Lund Nano Lab, and opportunities to talk to real scientists.

At Kulturnatten 2025 you can look forward to:

  • The Department of Physics at Lund University celebrates its 75th anniversary – join us on a journey through the history of the department.
  • Kulturnatten turns 40!
  • Visit our popular Physics and laser show.
  • The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology – explore our brand-new Quantum Room with demonstrations on quantised energy levels, superconductivity, quantum optics, quantum computing and much more. Don’t miss Armin Tavakoli’s lecture on 100 Years of Quantum Mechanics.
  • The day culminates in our annual Science Slam, where researchers have five minutes to present their work in an entertaining way – and you get to vote for your favourite!

Find us on the lawn near Sölvegatan 14 (next to the laser show) and join us inside for exciting demonstrations, lab tours, lectures and our Science Slam!

Lectures:

14:00 – 100 Years of Quantum Mechanics: From Radical Physics to Groundbreaking Technologies for the 21st Century – Armin Tavakoli

Quantum physics is the most intellectually radical theory of modern science. The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. This marks not only the 100th anniversary of the theory, but also the ongoing Second Quantum Revolution, where quantum physics underpins groundbreaking new technologies. This lecture begins where classical physics collapsed and quantum mechanics was born, and follows its development all the way to today’s global race towards future quantum technologies.

16:00 – Catching a Thought: Magnetism, MRI and Meditation – Johan Mauritsson & Karin Markenroth Bloch

Is it possible to see what someone is thinking? Can you compete in meditation – and how would the results be measured? How are we affected by the transition to LED lighting? Johan Mauritsson and Karin Markenroth Bloch will answer these questions and more, presenting results from a range of MRI experiments.

Lab Tour: NanoLund – Exploring the Nanoworld (Swedish / English)

Take part in one of our guided tours of Lund Nano Lab, starting with an introduction to science at the nanometre scale. The tour continues with a walk through the cleanroom facilities. Places are limited, so come early.

Tour times: 16:00 (Swedish), 16:50 (English), 17:40 (Swedish), 20:15 (Swedish), 21:05 (English).

19:00 – Science Slam

Our annual Science Slam, where researchers have five minutes to present their research in an entertaining way – and you decide the winner by voting for your favourite.

And don’t miss our other activities!

The Department of Physics will also be active in other venues: visit the planetarium at Vattenhallen (12:00–20:00), and if the skies are clear we will open the domes of the Astronomy Building for stargazing.
